Most comparison pages list free plans without explaining what you're actually giving up. This guide does both: what you get and what you don't, for every free tier that matters in 2026. We signed up for each plan, built campaigns, tested automation (where available), and documented exactly where each free tier draws the line.

One critical distinction: "free plan" and "free trial" are different things. A free plan has no time limit. You can use it indefinitely within the constraints. A free trial gives you full access for 14-30 days and then requires payment. This guide focuses on genuine free plans.       The catch is real: no automation on free. You can send broadcasts (one-off campaigns) to your full list, but you cannot build automated welcome sequences, tag-triggered workflows, or drip campaigns. For many early-stage creators, manual broadcasts are enough. But if automation is part of your strategy from day one, Kit's free plan forces you to upgrade to the $29/month Creator plan or look elsewhere.

      What you do get free: tag-based subscriber management, landing pages, signup forms, the Creator Network (cross-promotion with other newsletters), and basic reporting. The email editor is intentionally minimal (text-focused, personal, clean). Commerce features (digital product sales, tip jars) are available on free.

          For businesses with a large existing contact list and moderate sending frequency (a monthly newsletter, occasional promotions), this model is genuinely efficient. You pay nothing to maintain the list, and 300 emails per day (roughly 9,000 per month) covers a weekly send to about 2,000 subscribers.

          Automation is included on free. You can build welcome sequences, triggered workflows, and basic conditional logic without paying anything. The built-in CRM (also free) handles contact management and basic deal tracking. Transactional email API access is included, which is unusual for a free tier.
