We tested 13 platforms against those three criteria. We signed up for every free plan and trial, built campaigns, set up automation workflows, and tracked what each tool actually costs at 1,000, 5,000, and 10,000 subscribers. The results made the recommendation clear.

One thing to address upfront: Mailchimp is the tool most small businesses default to, and in 2026, that default is a mistake. Mailchimp counts unsubscribed contacts toward your subscriber limit, applies automatic overage charges without warning, and has raised prices consistently since the Intuit acquisition.
